Some smoothies are healthy in theory and vaguely disappointing in practice. Not this one.
This matcha smoothie is thick, creamy, genuinely filling, and has a flavour that makes you feel like you ordered it from a very good café. It comes together in about two minutes and is the single best use of an overripe banana I have ever encountered.
Ingredients (serves 1)
- 1 tsp The Matcha Yaad Strawberry Matcha
- 1 frozen banana (peeled before freezing)
- ½ cup oat milk
- 1 tbsp almond butter or cashew butter
- 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
- Small handful of spinach (optional)
- 3–4 ice cubes if your banana isn't frozen
Method
- Add everything to a blender.
- Blend until completely smooth.
- Taste and adjust sweetness.
- Pour and drink immediately before it separates.
A few things to note:
Frozen banana: This is the secret to a thick, creamy smoothie without needing to add loads of ice (which dilutes the flavour). Peel, slice and freeze your bananas when they start to spot. Future you will be grateful.
Nut butter: Beyond the nutrition, nut butter adds body and a richness that elevates this smoothie considerably. Don't skip it.
Matcha: No need to pre-whisk here; the blender will incorporate it. However, sifting it before adding helps avoid clumps getting trapped in the blender blades. You can use any of our Matcha flavours. This smoothie recipe is forgiving.
Spinach: Genuinely optional, genuinely undetectable. The matcha's green colour means no one will know. But the added iron and folate make it worth it.
Breakfast in a cup. Let's go.
